Good evening my fair patrons. This post, I almost want to credit a YouTuber named AvE. His videos, I spend hundreds of hours watching Iif I spent 20 minutes… The way he would expand on simple items. Like a drill, he would, (still does, I am speaking in past tense because I do not watch YouTube anymore). He would take a drill, or a screw driver, or a hair dryer. He would Review it, but he would take it completely apart!

I am a tool nerd…

Since I was freaking 10 years old I have had a fascination with tools. God, I know its gross to me too, I have just learned to live with it.

What kind of tools? Pliers, screw drivers, OH but the list goes so deep I don’t even want to start

I am a “professional trades person”

look guys, this is a little like saying “military grade”. It sounds impressive but those who know… A professional is simply a person who is being paid. So in this case, simply someone who is being paid to do a “trade”. Here we go again… There are more trades than there are tools, or tools than there are trades? Not even the companies doing or making either can tell you!

Let’s talk about… Multi tools! Leatherman brand, Gerber, Victorinox, etc. You know. Foldable plyers with knifes and screw drivers. Been around since the 80s.

Wow really? Only the 70s or 80s. Before that what did we have? Normal hand tools. I guess. I just work here….

The multi tool usecase

Its a gift for a 13 year old, it is a trades man’s best friend. It is supposedly EMT Police tested.

They do it all… But the elephant in the room. We all know it. Together… THEY DO EVERYTHING BUT THEY ALSO SUCK AT EVERYTHING.

Such is life. You can’t have it all, good fast or cheap. Pick 2. Peion.

My breakthrough today…

It is an invaluable “filler tool”. Thats it. For that, its worth the $200 they sometimes cost. Because, when I am up on a ladder and I need a Philips and a pair of pliers. That somehow I didnt know I needed when I climbed up here… Tim Leatherman has the answer.

BUT… This is a slippery slope. Tim gets you 90% of the way there but don’t forget the Elephant…

They are not primary tools. Simply. To me. They mare fasteners, they do not provide full format leverage. They increase risk of fall damage to people. They do a lot of things badly. They are costly. They are hard to sharpen.

The revelation… It is a backup, that’s it.

Oh, and my real pair of pliers might be “warn out”. They flex a lot, that has caused me to look for other options sort of intrinsicly, if that makes sense..

Conclusion

Load up your bucket or your box with actual tools. Today it made so much sense. It was like I was being lazy.

But thats why I write this, to share.
