Holy bleep bleep bleep. Did you know this was a thing? For some reason it clicked in my head this morning #showerthoughts
The idea is… Your body, its DNA. It is this set of instructions that every cell is following in thier own way. I just love this idea idk why.
So what if the cells in your feet always touch let’s say motor oil.
You would see them, idk, see the effects of man made hydrocarbon fluids with suspended heavy metals and half the periodic table.
Mechanics will tell you, that oil will eat you…
That’s not what this is about
This is about, the more subtle things. The effects that do not get us all at once. Not ones that you see and need to immediately heal from. Unless they are happening over and over.
The body builds facilities to handle its environment
I guess this is well known. I was able to discover entire research fields dedicated to this effect. Here is a table of common chemicals that literally alter the way your genes function!
That is the point here. There are suttle things. In everything. Organic and non. They tell our body to do certain things. On such a small level it seems. All the way down to our #DNA
| Chemical / Group | Common Sources | Known Gene-Expression / Regulatory Effects |
|---|---|---|
| BPA (Bisphenol A) | Polycarbonate plastics, epoxy resins, some food-contact materials, receipts | Can alter hormone-responsive genes, DNA-repair pathways, apoptosis-related genes, and DNA methylation patterns. |
| Phthalates | Flexible PVC, fragrances, personal-care products, plastics | Associated with changes in endocrine, metabolic, inflammatory, and developmental gene-expression pathways. |
| PFAS | Stain-resistant materials, grease-resistant coatings, some firefighting foams, industrial products | Can alter genes involved in lipid metabolism, PPAR signaling, cholesterol regulation, and immune function. |
| Inorganic Arsenic | Contaminated groundwater, some industrial exposures, historically pesticides and wood treatment | Associated with widespread transcriptional changes and altered DNA methylation, oxidative-stress, and cell-growth pathways. |
| Cadmium | Tobacco smoke, batteries, pigments, industrial work, contaminated food | Strongly affects metallothionein, antioxidant, heat-shock, apoptosis, and cell-proliferation genes. |
| Benzene | Gasoline, petrochemical work, solvents, combustion exposure | Can alter gene expression and methylation in bone-marrow and blood-forming cells, including immune and apoptosis pathways. |
| Formaldehyde | Pressed wood, resins, manufacturing, combustion products | Can change expression of genes involved in inflammation, oxidative stress, DNA-damage response, and the cell cycle. |
| Organophosphate Pesticides | Agricultural pesticides and some pest-control products | Can affect neuronal, inflammatory, endocrine, and developmental gene-expression pathways. |
| PCBs | Legacy electrical equipment, contaminated soil and food | Can alter AhR-related, endocrine, immune, and xenobiotic-metabolism gene-expression pathways. |
| Dioxins (including TCDD) | Industrial contamination and combustion byproducts | Bind the AhR receptor and directly alter transcription of genes such as CYP1A1 and other detoxification-related genes. |
| PAHs | Tobacco smoke, diesel exhaust, fires, charred food | Activate AhR signaling and alter expression of detoxification, oxidative-stress, inflammatory, and DNA-damage-response genes. |
| Flame Retardants | Furniture foam, electronics, textiles, older building materials | Some compounds can alter thyroid-related, metabolic, neurological, and developmental gene-expression pathways. |
(Ai made the table. I talk to the robot ok! Haha. He helps me format ideas.) These words are mine…
ANYWAY
Stay safe out there people! I really had never thought about the idea that we are in fact changing the very way our biological information system works threw simple environmental exposure.
Now I mean I guess dont freak out but sheesh. Its so strait forward it would seem!
