Its Raining Data!

Its currently 1AM, but I have been asleep for 8+ hours, so, am kind of in a tough spot.

The life of even worse, people pay me to be online. What kind of rotten sad life have I made for myself…

For some reason I like it. It makes me feel like a little kid. I set up all these computers/ servers and take care of them. They have their problems but the solutions are always so logical they satisfy me like a field mouse who found a seed.

Information, what a word.

Its nothing, and everything. Oh geez, why am I even here, I could be doing client work.

In-For-Mation of what? To form a formation. But this is “In” “formation”. As if this thing is to bring about a formation of some kind. To be In Formation is to be in order, military’s are “in formation” when they are set into their marching blocks all doing their prescribed motions with their prescribed outfits to the pre-agreed upon ques.

Lets go deeper, what does “For” mean?

Mation is the other piece. The origin of that piece is not current English but French and Latin.

In, we all know “in”.

Lets tie it all together: In (to bring into existence) For (for the reason of) Mation (A created state of ordered mater or being)

TO BRING INTO EXSISTANCE A STATE OF MATTER OR BEING!!!

That sounds like freaking wizard words or something.

But isn’t it? One of my favorite quotes is “any significant technology is indistinguishable from magic to the un-informed observer”. (roughly)

Why would you not be intrigued by such a concept! To be able to literally bring states of matter and being and all sorts of cool stuff heck yeah lets start making some information! Or buying some or learning some or something because I want to Form some stuff I need some In-For-Mation now!

Screw woodworking, i’m just going to use information. Ha, eat my technological dust potato farmers.

The means by which humans do like anything.

Such a broad topic. Now that I write this I see the resemblance between it and the concept of Infinity. It is like trying to wrap your brain around something that is by design “unwrappable” That is literally why we have the concept to illustrate some things stretch outside of our immediate understanding of ourselves and our environment.

But it is concepts like infinity that are then themselves bound by “information”. For they cannot exist without it, at least not in a way we can share with each other.

We created a single digit symbol for Infinity, what a brain twist that is. So you’re telling me, we have a concept that means this thing is so “big” that big isn’t even accurate its more like “all” or some hippie BS you wont be able to understand without some mushrooms.

We took that concept and made it ∞

You see how tricky this is,

For some concepts, regardless of depth, we have condensed them into single characters, while for other things, we have like some dudes note book and a GitHub the owners account got lost, but the code still works so you know, good enough for production.

Some things have been seen by a single person and some have so much behind them they are simply talked about as symbols.

So lets talk about the other symbols in the room with us.

Letters, Numbers, Symbols: Create Information

Simply, we have tools. To create this “information” again I want to take a second to break down that word because it is a lot in one. We can use it more simply as “formation” The “in” is implied when we are talking about written or spoken ideas/ phrases/ documents. For we all know the documents, phrases, words, they do not do the actual material handing, we do, be we do need these things to do it, often.

Formation. We need to form something, so we need to create information. So a few ways to do this:

  • Speak
  • Write
  • Draw
  • Sculpt
  • Assemble
  • Think

I am sure there are more but you get the idea. We need something to happen here and the first step is to at least think about what it is going to take to get started. Even if we physically, simply just “begin” something, there is information involved here, you have done this before or you have learned from someone else. I guess you can be acting purely on impulse but whatever act you are doing will likely involve at least some sort of pre sorted information right?

Where are we going…

Nowhere, haha, I fooled you! JK, the core idea here is “information” is kind of the root of most things you do. Like just in general hard stop all the time.

We all have our frameworks. I know I have mine, why do I take the time to recycle? Because I have the information of a friend who works at the landfill and I have seen his personal frustration with people who just throw everything in the same bin. It makes no difference if my actions are warranted or not, I do them. I physically bring my human body to burn calories in the name of this piece of information.

Religious

Oh no, I’m gonna get in and get out on this one. Religions are the best examples to me of “information frameworks”. The pre teach a person a set of information so they can use it to navigate the world and not get bit by the things that are not obvious.

Disclaimer, i was only referring to the order of the flying spaghetti monster, the other ones are 100% based in fact but I don’t claim to be a member of any one except i wear a cross because my mother/ father are Christian kinda.

Where is he going with this…

INFORMATION SYSTEMS… It is an entire industry. They are mechanical systems for spreading this “information” across all domains in any way we would like.

How important. Yes so important we stuff them in broom closets and dump sodas on them and laugh when the skinny pale guy has to leave his windowless office and come mouth breath down your neck for 4 hours while he tries to recover the entire companies past 20 years of collective work from a server that was EOL 5 years ago but the President said we “didn’t need in the first place”.

It doesn’t need to be like that. In fact, I would argue as time goes on the people with that mentality will become uncompetitive in the market.

Humans have accelerated ourselves to a place where we are the bottle neck. We are the thing stopping the data from flowing. Our systems are often underloaded or have headroom built in. When something is “overloaded” its simply a question of taking some time to adjust it and give it more whatever it needs.

Some sort of conclusion…

Honor information. But don’t let it come into your life unfiltered or create any that is meant to cause harm. For it is powerful.

We as humans use it whether we like it or not. Do you disagree? Do you find yourself doing things without the use of information? Because honestly I am jealous.

So use it, as an individual own it and use it to get what you want! As a child I hated writing, it takes so much time and is so tedious. Now look, I do it on a whim at 2am. That is maturity to me, becoming ok with spending energy.

Information can change the physical world, and ourselves, I argue it does most of the time.
