All jokes aside. I am not alone in my feelings about the social media companies and thier ways of making us keep scrolling. It seems at times “too good”

You know what else is good? Penicillin! Yes, even the hardest conspiracy theorists can attest to the literal human miracle that is Penicillin. When i was a kid i used to watch the movie Balto over and over. The dog had to deliver this magic substance to the sick child, i remember seeing its golden brown color illustrated on the back of a toboggan in the middle of a snow storm. The urgency of the characters to get this to the child.

Humans can do amazing things. We do research, we test, we share, discuss, and sometimes we truly create something that can do something like save lives.

In that same vein, we do the opposite. we research ways to dominate and obscure lies.

That is why I am making this post. The same ideas over and over. With power comes responsibility, a concept as old as humans.

Information systems/ Algorithms as systems to deliver audio visual stimulus to humans causing determinable emotional response…

WHAT IF… Just what if, like Penicillin, humans could in fact create systems that can in fact alter themselves. In very powerful ways.

This is true, this is the entire basis of the 2nd largest industry on planet earth. Healthcare. Yes, 2nd to literally energy production, health care is the largest industry. I think, you can always check me.

Why is this? because being able to alter ourselves is literally what has let us become the dominant species on earth. Not by biomass but by per capita energy consumption we eclipse by several orders of magnitude.

We have created these bodies, threw practice and evolution. We fuel them with things of our own creation and do things to them with our own hands.

So why is it so hard to believe that we can create simple audio visual systems that invoke strong emotional response? We know how we work and we can change it, back to Penicillin. We have seen for thousands of years humans are capable of these things.

Why do we not take this for what it is?

I don’t know. I am starting to. These systems follow the same curves as drugs. I have had some addictions in my life, scrolling feels like just another one.

So many people say these exact things. I just want to tie them together because I had the realization we need to start treating these companies as essentially medical services or like utility providers. For their power is just too much. Not threw regulation but threw personal self control maybe. IDK.

We should fully embrace as people that scrolling feeds evoke emotional responses in humans. That’s it. How simple. How simple to say we have created such a thing. So why do we deny? Why are there so many excuses made?

Information speaks for itself, I believe. What I have discussed touches some things I am sure are not agreed on by all. I welcome CIVIL, non emotional discussion. Emotions have their place but it is not in strategic debate. Sue me.

To contract practiced doctors and preform psychological testing under the cover of “they read the terms and conditions” will not be an argument that holds up over the generations. That’s what ill end with.
